INTERVIEW: Etheridge And Shuler Voted For Higher Utility Bills, Income Reduced By $3091 And 38,907 NC Jobs Lost

Dear producers and reporters:

When North Carolina Congressmen Bob Etheridge (NC-2) and Heath Shuler (NC-11) voted for the Waxman-Markey energy tax bill in June, they voted to wreak havoc on North Carolina's economy. Waxman-Markey would reduce personal income in North Carolina by $3,091 annually and cost the state 38,907 jobs annually starting in 2012, according to an analysis by the Heritage Foundation.

Since about 62% of North Carolina's electricity is produced by burning coal, Waxman-Markey could increase monthly electric bills in NC by about 60%. Keep in mind that:

  • This is just the increase in the direct cost of electricity to North Carolina ratepayers -- i.e., what they may see in their monthly bills. Since all goods and services are produced with electricity, any increase will ripple throughout the economy, making everything more expensive. Waxman-Markey is a form of inflation.
  • To the extent that Waxman-Markey makes consumers pay more for electricity, they will have less discretionary income to spend on other goods and services.
  • No commensurate environmental benefit will be achieved for these increased costs -- a point that both the global warming skeptics and global warming alarmists agree. Skeptics don't think that manmade CO2 emissions discernibly impact the climate. Alarmists don't believe the Waxman-Markey CO2 cuts are steep enough to have an impact on the climate.
  • No regulatory certainty will be result from Waxman-Markey -- except that extreme environmental groups will have a great ability and framework within which to make regulation more stringent and expensive.

Waxman-Markey is an economic and environmental loser. The only winners will be a few big businesses that have successfully lobbied for a piece of the Waxman-Markey pie -- a pie that will be dearly paid for by American consumers, taxpayers and the vast majority of American businesses.

North Carolina voters should let Reps. Etheridge and Shuler know that by voting for Waxman-Markey, they've placed their own jobs at risk too.
